Content derived from the Wikipedia article on TOS
Tape Operating System From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation, search The Tape Operating System (TOS) was an IBM operating system for the System 360, used in the early days around 1965 to support the IBM 360 model 30 and similar platforms. TOS was a predecessor to IBM's Disk Operating System.
TOS died out really early as disks such as the IBM 2311 and IBM 2314 became common with the IBM 360 whereas they had been a real luxury on the IBM 7090.
TOS was never considered as part of the mainstream and was used specifically for 360 model 30 tape only systems that replaced 1401s. I worked for IBM in the UK and I am only aware of one TOS installation. When the TOS Supervisor needed to load a sub routine, the TOS tape drive would wind or rewind frantically while the System sat idle just waiting. It really made the case for DASD!
